1.Sepia seated knees up - back signed Cornelius Snyder, 1st Lieut. Co. H 52nd Infantry Vol. Address Aurora Keane Co. Illinois. Cornelius Snyder was from Aurora and started out as a First Sergeant on Nov. 19, 1861. He was promoted to 2nd Lt. and later to 1st Lt. on Dec. 17, 1863. The 52nd Illinois Infantry was prominent in the Battle at Shiloh, Tenn. Apr. 6 and 7, 1862 losing 170 men. Heavily engaged in the action of Corinth, Miss., Apr. 3 and 4, 1862, the regiment lost 70 men but pursued the retreating Confederates as far as Ruckersville. Lt. Snyder mustered out of Co. H on Dec. 18, 1864 probably as proud as his CDV photo here implies. I have seen two other signed original CDVs of him besides this one over the years that he probably presented to friends or relatives during the Civil War era. - $200 C29
